Let's admit it, periods are by no stretch of the imagination fun, they are however highly necessary. Even though I would much rather prefer to actually go in the water instead of laying on the beach, looking at my group of friends having fun, I am very thankful to have a pretty stable period cycle- even if it means that I might have to miss a few exciting activities. Nonetheless, I do remember a time in my life when I absolutely hated how erratic and spontaneous my period once was. Yes, I do too have some embracing stories to share, but maybe in another post.
My solution since middle school had been to keep at least a few tampons and maxi pads "just in case". Sure they weren't comfy nor discreet, however they were as much lick-proof as any “feminine hygiene” product was going to be - or so I thought. But as soon as I started to research all about the recent horror stories involving toxic shock syndrome and the dreadful impacts of inserting bleach, full of chemicals cotton inside me, I found myself reaching for alternative methods.
This is how I discovered the world of period underwear - and soon after, their pretty outrageous prices. So, that thought stayed locked at the back of my head until I came across some detailed, unbiased online reviews. They were raving about the underwear they had just received, apparently, they looked and felt just like regular underwear.
I’ve been admittedly a bit unwilling to try them. On a scale of the menstrual cup–which I find absolutely the scariest thing in the world–to my all trusted pad–definitely not comfy but overall effective-period proof underwear falls somewhere in the between. One time I was almost ready to hit the order button, but again, 50$ is way too much to invest in something you hardly believe in. And then, there were the questions. Will they make me look like a 26-year old grandma? What about the first two days, when my flow is pretty much uncontrollable? Isn't it just gross to feel your own blood?
Well, my fellow skeptics, I have news for you. The quick answers are no, no, and no, because I am happy to report that in 2021, I finally tested a pair of period panties (even though it took some convincing). I will admit that I not only took way fewer trips to the bathroom, I also felt surprisingly dry and ready to wear my regular, everyday trousers- darker colors just in case. Not to mention my surprise when I read that Leak Proof Period Panties are indeed the most eco-friendly choice when it comes to "that day of the month".
If you are still unconvinced, consider this your sign, because today I rounded up some wallet-friendly period underwear straight from the catalog of a female-owned business that offers both quality and quantity- feel free to try them for yourself.
